After spending months at home in quarantine, many will be longing to hit the beach or lake for some outdoor water sports.

While making sure to adhere to health guidelines amid the pandemic, there are ways eco-conscious fitness enthusiasts can enjoy working up a sweat on the water and still minimize their carbon footprint.

So instead of heading out on a motorized boat or personal watercraft, here are a few water sports that are also environmentally conscious.

Swimming

The most basic of water activities doesn’t require any equipment as you propel yourself against the current. The one thing to remember is to use sunscreen that doesn’t contain any octinoxate and oxybenzone, which can damage coral reefs, according to BioFriendlyPlanet.

Diving and Snorkeling

When exploring the underwater ecosystem it’s important to consider how you are getting to your diving site. If a motorized boat is being used, alternate vessels that use oars should be considered.

Paddle Boarding and Kayaking

Both activities provide great upper body workouts, while paddle boarding will also require skill to be able to stand upright. Regardless of which you choose, make sure you aren’t disturbing ecosystems or endangering any inhabitants with your paddle or oar. Also be mindful not to drop anything from your kayak into the water and dispose of any litter upon arrival back on land.

Sailing

Sailing takes you away and doesn’t require the burning of fuel. Using the power of wind and - unless you are properly trained - a navigator, a day out on the water can be easy on the eyes and the planet. And like on a kayak, just make sure all rubbish is discarded once you return to shore.
