These shoes will put some pep in your step.

XpreSole, by CCILU Footwear, is giving coffee lovers and sneakerheads the pick-me-up they’ve both been waiting for with a line of shoes made from used coffee grounds.

The first product from the line of sustainable footwear is the Cody sneaker, made from spent coffee grounds (SCG) with an “aromatic” coffee smell, reports Environmental + Energy Leader.

The shoe’s primary components — the upper, insole and outsole — are all primarily made from SCG. One pair of each Cody is produced from five cups of coffee.

CCILU laid out four main objectives for the new manufacturing method in their XpreSole Technology Plan:

1. Minimize SCG landfill
2. Minimize Methane (CH4) and Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emissions
3. Minimize petroleum consumption
4. Minimize carbon footprint

The company’s plan is laid out with aims to decrease the use of petroleum-based traditional materials by 30% in the footwear industry.

And it’s not just for shoes! Other applications for recycled spent coffee grounds include deodorant, biofuel, and mushroom cultivation.

CCILU is also exploring how the technology can be used for 3D printing, planting and feeding, alternative energy and other apparel as well.
